This 6,000-acre freshwater wetland is one of New York’s largest and with more than 14 miles of beautiful, calm, nature-filled waters, it’s one you don’t want to miss. The Great Swamp is just 70 miles from New York City, but you’ll see few signs of civilization as you navigate the primeval wilderness. You will likely see painted turtles, herons, kingfishers, red-wing blackbirds, dragonflies and maybe even a beaver, muskrat or otter. The park’s shallow and marshy 94-acre Waywayanda Lake is a popular destination for kayakers and canoeists. There is a hand launch into the lake from Waywayanda Court. The lake is also known for a variety of fish including black crappie, brown bullhead, largemouth bass and bluegill, making it a popular fishing spot as well.
